Identifications

The minipigs are identified in three different ways.

When the piglets are born, they are assigned with a five digit consecutive number. Within 24 hours of birth, ear clipping will be performed. Thus the last two digits of the assigned number will be identifying the piglet, until the piglets are weaned at four weeks of age.

At weaning the pigs will be ear tagged (the ear tag is placed in the right ear) showing the assigned number.
The pigs are also chipped at this point. The chipping is done using a sokymat injectable microchip, placed behind the right ear in the pars cervicalis mm. trapezii. The tags we have chosen to use are type 64 bit ASK moduled Manchester decoded tags.

An open standard makes it possible to read this tag worldwide with different reading equipment. Furthermore this tag can be purchased from various producers. The tag we use now, Tag 601201, is a standard implementable glass chip that can be read from various standard readers or by a tag informer from Sokymat.

The tag is made of bioglass 8625 for use in organic tissue and is tested in accordance to IEC standard 68.2.6/26.

The tag will thus provide each animal with a unique number in addition to the animal number shown by the ear tag.

These measures will ensure an easy and reliable identification of the individual pig.
